Barrington Clergy Association's MLK Community Service.

The 2007-2008 MLK, Jr. Essay Contest in Honor of Rabbi James Rosenberg has begun.  This year's question is: If MLK,Jr. was alive today, what advice do you think he would have for your generation?

We are pleased to announce this year's essay winner, 11th Grader Meagan Gamache!
Here is her winning essay - congratulations Meagan!

Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream—one that continues to captivate generations of Americans seeking to understand, repeat, and find solace in the strength of his message and the diligence of his words.  In reflecting on the power of his leadership and the affection that we, as a nation, reserve for his memory, I do not believe that he would be proud to know that we continue to debate whether or not we are prepared for a black president.  We continue to reiterate his message—his dream—as if we all genuinely believe that his idea of freedom and equality for all as contained in our constitution—“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”—encompasses and defines our personal goals for this nation.  If he were here today, I believe that he would, instead, encourage us to look at the world we have created and ask ourselves if our brothers and sisters of all races and creeds have achieved justice.  He would then suggest that we garner the courage to not invest our political and social insecurities in issues of race and diversity, but in the power and strength of our camaraderie as a united American people.
